An International Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), that runs a campaign on girls’ education in Africa this week donated twelve laptops and internet routers to twelve girls at the Catholic University of Malawi as one way of encouraging the girl to remain in schools.
The NGO, Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) donated to assist the first-year girls’ students in accessing quality education offered by the university.
Speaking on behalf of the university management, the Assistant Registrar (Academics) Mr. Jimmy Kayange commended the organisation for the gesture saying the laptops and the routers are to help the girls in their studies as the university is using a blended approach of teaching students due to COVID-19.
The Assistant Registrar then urged the girls to work extra hard in their education as a way of appreciating the donation made by CAMFED towards their education.
CAMFED Operations Director Susan Silika disclosed that the organisation will continue to be supportive to the girls until they complete their studies in various programmes offered at the university.
“First, we were excited that you made it to this university, as CAMFED we do not expect anything in return from you, what we want is to see you being responsible citizens of this nation but also be models in communities you are coming from,” said Silika.
Silika then applauded the cordial relation that the organisation has with the university in making sure that the girls have access to the quality holistic education offered.
One of the beneficiaries of CAMFED donation, Alinafe Silence who is studying for a Bachelor of Commerce (Banking and Finance) said the laptop and the router are to help them in their studies.
“These days, when one has a laptop and access to the internet, you can easily get learning materials online, talk of; journals, academic papers, books for us students to read,” said Silence.
Besides the donation, CAMFED is also paying for the tuition fee to the twelve girls who received the laptop and internet gadgets from the organisation.
The organisation has since announced that it will continue supporting more young girls to study at the Catholic University of Malawi.
