Catholic University Eying K1 Billion for Needy Students

The Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) is eying to raise K1 billion to support needy students currently facing hiccups in paying their tuition fees at the university.

In a memo addressed to staff members and students, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Wilfred Sumani, said the university is set to launch the Championing Higher Education for Needy Students (CHENS) campaign to mobilise resources and money for the needy and deserving students.

“The deepening economic crisis is making it increasingly difficult for students from financially challenged backgrounds to pay tuition fees,” reads part of the memo signed by Fr. Sumani.

The memo further indicates that hundreds of students flock to the office of the Vice Chancellor, requesting financial consideration, hence putting up a campaign to mobilise resources in response to the outcry.

According to the management, the funds mobilised will be used for investment as a way of ensuring the sustainability of the program of assisting students that are needy at the university.

Management has since pleaded with the corporate world and well-wishers to join hands in raising funds for the students in need.

With a student population of over 5000 students, the Catholic University of Malawi registers students who qualify for quality and holistic education from different family backgrounds.

Despite being a public university, people opt for the Catholic University of Malawi in the country due to the holistic education that the university offers.
