Students from the Faculty of Education at the Catholic University of Malawi have donated learning materials to Chigodi Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) as part of their commemoration of the World Teachers Day celebration.
Speaking after making the donation on Friday morning this week, the Head of the Department of Education at the University, Alipo Kaphwiyo, said the kind gesture follows the needs at the school.
“The school is within our catchment area at the same time in the rural setup where learners face so many challenges in accessing education due to limited resources, so we thought of coming here to assist as teachers,” said Kaphwiyo.
She then urged other well-wishers to consider supporting the education sector that anchors the country’s development.
“As we are commemorating Teachers Day this year, let me plead with other institutions out there to consider supporting schools in the rural parts of the country.” Added Kaphwiyo.
Headmistress of Chigodi CDSS Rosemary Kazembe Makolija commended the university for donating to the school, saying the materials will support the learning of students at the school.
“We are happy that our friends from the Catholic University of Malawi thought of coming here to support us. During our interaction, they have also reminded us as teacher Chigodi of some skills that we can be using to teach our students.
The donated materials include flip charts, makers, cartoons of chalk, black and white board erasers, and Teaching and Learning Using Locally Available Resources products made by students of the university.
Established in 1994, World Teachers’ Day is an international day held annually on 5 October to celebrate the work of teachers; however, the university is commemorating the day today with many activities that include an awareness big walk to Chigodi CDSS, motivational speeches, and outdoor games.
